About

📚 The book you keep meaning to finish

We all have one (or five). This is a dedicated afternoon to actually get through it.

Bring whatever you’ve been putting off, a novel, a non fiction brick, or the book club pick you’re behind on, and give it two quiet, focused reading blocks. We’ll take a coffee break in the middle to chat about what everyone’s reading.

Your host will be deep in The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende. Come make progress on yours.

1pm to 4pm at Typist on Dupont. Just bring a book.

The structure really helped me stay focused and be very productive. The built in check-ins make it feel sustainable. It's a mix of work and socializing that I don't always find on my own.

The ritual

The room hears you,
and the work shifts.

Pre-block

Out loud: what you're about to do.

Post-block

Out loud: how it went.

That's the ritual. Two questions, asked out loud, with other people in the room. It's how the work gets real.

I started Creative Blocks because too much meaningful work gets postponed when you’re doing it alone. Some of my best work happened around people doing work they cared about, and that kind of focus is contagious.

Creative Blocks is my attempt at creating more rooms like that.

Questions you probably have

FAQ

  • The book you’ve been meaning to finish, and anything that helps you settle in. Physical books and readers are both welcome.

  • Not at all. Bring whatever you want to make progress on. This is about your own reading, not a set text.

  • The reading blocks are quiet so everyone can focus, but there’s a coffee break in the middle to chat, and time at the end to share what you got into.

  • Not quite. There’s no assigned reading or discussion to prepare. It’s a focused space to read your own book, with a little community around it.

  • Of course. There’s no target and no pressure. Read at whatever pace feels good, the point is just to make progress.
